Master of Science (MS) Program in Management Information Systems (MIS) focuses on the application of information systems concepts to the collection, storage, and retrieval of information for management decision making and planning. The program blends, theory and practice into a learning experience that develops skills applicable to the complex and changing real-world problems. It intends to prepare individuals to enhance their effectiveness in organizations through knowledge of information processes as instruments for achieving organizational goals. This specialized program also offers students opportunities to develop their skills necessary for corporate IT management and decision-making. The program is designed both for practicing computer professionals who want to develop their career in information systems. Thus program requirements will vary from student to student and are determined personally for each candidate depending on experience, previous education, and preferred career path.


Masters of Science (MS) Program in Management Information Systems (MIS) has the following specific objectives:

  • To provide sound theoretical knowledge and practical experience in the application of Information and Communications Technology in Management Decision Making and Planning;
  • To develop competencies necessary for effective management of Information Systems Functions in organizations of both public and business sectors; and
  • To develop the Research and Analytical Skills necessary to study various IT issues.

Eligibility for admission

The requirements for admission in MS in MIS degree program are:

  • Completion of the bachelor’s degree from a recognized university or an accredited institution of higher education in science, engineering, business, management, or a real
  • The applicant must have the CGPA 2.5 or above (in scale of 4.0), or least second class in the bachelor’s degree.
  • The applicant, not completing the enlisted prerequisite course or their
  • Applicant, not completing the enlisted prerequisite courses, will be admitted on condition that she/he completes these course in or two semesters.

Evaluation of applicants for admission is based on the student’s academic record in relevant undergraduate coursework. Provisional admission can be given to an applicant awaiting the result of her/his bachelor’s degree. Students who have work experience in the information field but do not have the required academic background may also qualify to apply for admission to the MIS program.

Credit requirement and duration of the program

The degree requirements of MS in MIS in MIS for students with three-year degree in CIS/CS/CSE or equivalent subjects are 42 credits with a minimum CGPA of 2.50 on a scale of

4.00. The program is either thesis based or project based. The project is of 9 credits and the thesis is of 12 credits. Students from academics discipline, other than CIS/CS/CSE or equivalent will be required to complete a maximum of 17 courses for the projects based program and 16 courses for the thesis-based program. Duration of the course may be varying from the three to six semesters, depending on the how many courses, a student has to undertake. In general, students who have completed the prerequisite courses prior to admission should be able to complete the required program in three semesters.

Evaluation and grading

The grading system

The performance of a student in a given course is based on a scheme of continuous assessment. For theory courses this continuous assessment is made through a set of class test, class evaluation, class participation, homework, assignment, presentation, mid semester and semester final examinations.

Each course has a certain number of credits, which describes, it’s corresponding weights. A letter grade is awarded in relation to grade point. A student’s performance is measured both by the number of credits completed satisfactorily and by the weighted average of the grade point earned. A minimum grade point average (GPA) is essential for satisfactory progress. A minimum number of earned credits also have to be acquired in order to qualify for the degree.

Letter grade and corresponding grade point will be awarded in academic with the provisions shown below:

Course in which a student gets F grade shall not be counted towards credit requirements and for the calculation of grade point average (GPA).

Grading and performance evaluation

Final grade of each course will be given on the basis of performance in class attendance, in- course examinations, assignments, midterm test and final examination as shown in table 2:

Thesis/ project committee and oral examination

The faculty of science and information technology would setup thesis/project committee for MS students. The thesis/ project committee for master’s grade program shall consist of at least three, but not more than five members. At least one member of the thesis project shall be from outside the university. The project/thesis committee will conduct the final oral examination of the thesis or project report and evaluate the performance of the work for 60 marks out of 100, and the supervisor will evaluate for rest 40 marks.


Calculation of GPA

Grade point average (GPA) is the weighted average of the grade points obtained in all the courses passed/completed by a student. For example, is a student passes/completes n courses in a semester having credit C1, C2……Cn and his/her grade points in these course are G1, G2……Gn respectively then.

Example for computing CGPA

Suppose a student has completed four semesters and obtained the GPA shown in table 4. In this case,

Minimum earned credits and GPA requirement for the degree award

The minimum CGPA for MS degree in MIS is 2.5 and at least 42 credits must be earned to be eligible for the master’s degree. Each student must maintain a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.0 for the duration of his or her program for good academic standing. A student with CGPA below 2.0 is on academic probation. Also academic provision may adversely affect financial aid, if any. If the CGPA is not raised to 2.0 within two semesters, the student will be dismissed from the program.

Course and credits

course designation and numbering

Each course is designed by a three-letter code identifying the program offering it, followed by a three-digit number having the following interpretation:

  • The first digit indicates year
  • The last two indicates course number

An example in the course code of MSMIS505, MSMIS stands for MS in MIS program, the other two digits indicates course number.

Assignments of credits

Credit is assigned on the basis of class hours within the 14-week semester. For a 3-credit theory course, the number of contact hours is three per week. In case of laboratory course, the number of contact hours in twice that for a theory course; for example the number of contact hours for one credit laboratory course is two hours per week.


Grouping of courses

Students willing to obtain a MS in MIS will have to follow the general guide lines of degree requirements of the university. The theoretical courses are organized as follows: prerequisite course, core course and elective course.

The core courses prepare the students to be able to design, develop and maintain the right information systems for management of organizations. These courses also prepare the student to assume both managerial and CIS role in their careers. Students with extensive experience in one or more of the course areas may be waived the appropriate courses and the student who is CIS/CS/CSE/Engineering/IT/Business graduates may be waived up to six courses. The students having background other than above mentioned programs and having no experience IT field should be required to complete all the 14 core courses, and 2 elective courses for thesis group and 14 core courses, 3 elective courses for the project group. Besides with the approval of dean, at most two courses of elective can be taken instead of two courses of core.

Prerequisite courses:

Students with bachelor degree in computing and information system (CIS), computer science and engineering or information technology or equivalent subject do not require prerequisite courses. Students with graduation or post-graduation in subjects other than CIS, complete 6 credits of prerequisite courses from the list given below:

A student must carry out research or development work under the supervision of a teacher and submit the project report or the thesis for evaluation by the project/thesis evaluation committee. The project thesis jointly supervised by a teacher and IT professional from industries. Credits for project and thesis are given below.
