Bachelor of Public Health

The field of Public Health is an interdisciplinary subject which extends from basic medical subjects to highly specialized public health subjects and technology. Bachelor of Public Health (BPH) is an undergraduate course in public health sciences. The duration of the course is of 4 years inclusive of hospital visits, thesis projects and internships. BPH course imparts knowledge and skills in students for public healthcare programs where they get to study subjects focusing on healthcare programs, policies, recent developments, social, behavioral and environmental health etc. Moreover, they also study human anatomy, disease physiology, and other relevant subjects. Besides, the BPH course has important subjects like Health Economics and Financing, Global Health, Community Health, Health Promotion, Health Policy and Planning. After completing the BPH course, a student has the potential to work with public health organizations, in hospitals etc. Moreover, Department of Public Health supports students to fully participate in all aspects of student life, student services and activities, including students’ engagement in academic and governance committees. The department emphasizes innovation and professionalism in all its education programs. It promotes personal and professional integrity, transparency, safety, ethics, accountability and competence.

Masters of Public Health

The Master of Public Health (MPH) Program focuses on comprehensive community care, prevention of diseases and promotion of health and well-being. To make health services accessible and available to those who need them the most, there is a need to improve health policy and formulate efficient planning and management at all levels of the health care system. The MPH program of DIU is designed to address understanding of public health hazards and environmental health issues in the community. The program aims to provide students with a foundation in public health and equip them with the knowledge and competencies necessary to initiate health promotion and health services development. The demand for such experts is rising as public health issues like obesity, the spread of infectious diseases, workplace safety, and pollution demand more attention and resources. So, this program provides the knowledge, skills and professional expertise to work in public health area.

Following the philosophy that prevention is better than cure, the program focuses on the systems and practices that shape the health of nations, communities and individuals. Issues that help determine our total quality of life are investigated, such as globalization, technology and environmental degradation. This program also includes population trends, lifestyle and nutrition, control of communicable and non-communicable diseases, industry pollution management and food and drug safety.

The program also integrates knowledge and practice from a range of fields including nutrition and dietetics, occupational health and safety, occupational rehabilitation and industrial relations. Since its inception, the MPH program of DIU has helped develop many successful professionals. One of them is working as Additional Secretary of Health of the Government of Bangladesh. Others are working in senior positions of renowned hospitals, NGOs, and international organizations.
